Meet Laura Avery
I am a self-taught French contemporary abstract artist and writer, working from my home atelier near Biarritz, France.
My practice is centred on the space between overwhelm and stillness, exploring how movement, rhythm and sensation gradually settle into moments of quiet. I work primarily with acrylic on cotton canvas, using fluid washes, translucent layers, open space and deliberate mark-making to create compositions that invite the eye to slow down and linger.
My artistic sensibility has been shaped in part by years spent living in Sydney and Copenhagen, and by my continued attention to light, space and pace. Before turning fully to painting, I worked for years as a freelance lifestyle and interior design writer for publications including Vogue Scandinavia, Stylist and InStyle. Writing taught me to look closely: to notice nuance, atmosphere and the emotional weight of seemingly small details. That way of observing continues to inform my approach to painting.
Each work is intentionally open, allowing the collector’s own memories, associations and emotions to enter the painting. My hope is that the work can become a quiet visual anchor — a place to pause, self-regulate and return to.
